Exercises That You Can Do At Home

As a physical therapist, I get a lot of people asking me how they "get into shape" at home after they finish their physical therapy sessions. Most of my patients aren't the health club types and they don't have a lot of money to spend on equipment or a lot of room to store it.

I generally tell them that it's fairly easy to stay in shape doing a workout without weights and that the hard part is committing themselves to a regular program. It's hard to keep yourself accountable when you have no incentive other than personal health! That may sound bad but it's the truth. My patients generally have to have permission from their boss, doctor, or family, to take responsibility for their own health.

Regularly performing 5-6 simple exercises will go a long way to ensuring that you will not develop conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. A good home exercise routine will include exercises to all major muscle groups. However, unlike most of the popular concepts of fitness, you don't have to kill yourself trying to reach some imagined sense of perfection or unrealistic goal for your physique.
Push ups, pull ups, and squats are the foundation of any good home exercise program. If you perfect these and a couple of other movements, you will be amazed at the difference they will make in your life.

Hands-On: Netflix for the iPhone Brings Big Movies to the Small Screen

As we noted yesterday, Netflix has just released its long-awaited iPhone app.

The app, which is free for Netflix subscribers (subscriptions start at $8.99 per month), works with iPhones or iPod touch devices running iOS 3.1.3 or later.

Like its iPad app, Netflix for the iPhone allows users to search for movies and TV shows as well as playing titles already in their Instant Q.

The app has not been optimized for iOS 4 or for the iPhone 4, but we expect that some of those updates may come in the future.

How to sooth a sore muscle!

Strained my back over the last weekend by doing too much on too little sleep. Low back, right side. Kills me trying to straighten when getting up from a chair.
I put of for a couple of days the exact thing that I knew would be the best thing for it (yes, ladies and gentlemen, I am a health care professional), because I absolutely HATE ice. But that’s what I finally decided to do.
I usually use an ice massage on my patients with strained muscles. This involves freezing water into a easy to handle block of ice that can then be applied directly to the tender points moving in a small circular pattern. Yep. I apply the ice directly to the skin as long as the person does not have a severe reaction to it.
I talked my wife into torturing me for about 6-7 minutes right on the most painful part of the spasm and voila!, about 75% better. That doesn’t mean that I am going to continue my workouts though at this point because I am not out of the woods yet. But, it does mean that I can actually do some stretching and distance walking just to stay limber without it killing me.
Ask your doctor or health care professional prior to attempting any treatment for a severe muscle strain. You don’t want to make it worse!

Doggles For A Working Dog

Nope, you aren’t seeing things. And, yes, these are for real.

These puppies help protect the eyes of military dogs. Especially those deployed along side troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. These pooches are high powered, highly trained specialists and would cost a pretty penny to replace if injured.

Why Some Exercise Without Weights.

Bruce Lee had said that his evolutionary approach to martial arts is “an expression of the human body”. This is true about any form of physical activity.
In some circles, the idea of exercising or strength training without weights is considered to be the younger and inexperienced sibling of the more mature typical gym strength and fitness routines. This may be because of the fitness industry boom of the 80′s and 90′s where tons of people flocked to the national fitness chains to see and to be seen. However, long before Arnold and Franco made a name for themselves, and the fitness club aerobics classes were standing room only (is that a pun?), the benefits of bodyweight workouts and strength training without weights was widely known and used.
Working out without weights in many cases has been preferred by those that were and are interested in, not maximizing the weights on a bench press bench but, learning to master and control their physical bodies in the most natural way possible. Some would say that it’s more of a spiritual connection.
