I am a huge UFC fan and I am making it a point to watch “The Ultimate Fighter” this season. The main reason for this is George St. Pierre. I am sure that the majority of those watching this season feel the same way.
Well, team GSP handed Josh Koscheck his team’s second defeat this week by pitting Michael Johnson against Aaron Wilkerson. Johnson supposedly went into the show with the reputation of being the best fighter in both camps and both team GSP and Koscheck wanted him as their first round pick. GSP won that one fairly easily.
Johnson won the fight as it had to go into 3 rounds. However, he didn’t look dominant. The Brit Wilkerson showed some good stand up skills as well as being able to exploit Johnson’s inability to defend from off his back.
The fight was actually pretty close with Koscheck telling his man that, in his opinion, both first rounds were his. I would agree that the rounds were awful close but I don’t think either fighter was dominant. I would call them a draw. Dana White looked at it differently than Josh did and also called them a draw and so there was a deciding third round.
During the prefight warm up a special guest named Mike Tyson showed up in Johnson’s dressing room. While we don’t know if the former heavy weight boxing champ had a private one on one with Johnson or not, what we do know is that Johnson decidedly beat the crap out of his opponent in the 3rd gaining his back and finally submitting the Brit with a rear naked choke.
Dana said that Johnson kept looking at Iron Mike Tyson between the 2nd and 3rd rounds and that something must have happened in his mind.
I’ll tell you what I think happened: Johnson remembered how Tyson Dispatched most of his opponents by simply overwhelming them in the first few seconds of a round and destroying them. He then proceeded to do the same thing. If Johnson is able to continue to tap into whatever inspiration he found during the brief time between rounds he will finish near, or on top, of this seasons championships.
