What Muscles Do Squats Work?

The Squat Is The Best Lower Body Exercise There Is

The Squat is one of the best exercises that you could do when your working out without weights. I say this for several reasons. Primarily its a very functional movement. We go through several squatting activities through out the day, whether we are getting into/out of the car or even off the toilet.

In order to do a squat properly takes not only strength but good balance. To perform a squat correctly requires an incredible amount of neuro-muscular integration to keep the body mass centered and not tip one way or the other.

What Muscles Do Squats Work?

Many people don’t realize the number of muscles that are actually at work when you do a squat. Here is a list of the major muscles used when you do a squat:

  • The quads
  • The Hamstrings
  • The Gluteus Maximus
  • The Low Back, Thoracic, and Cervical Erector Spinae
  • The Tibialis Anterior (front of the Calf)
  • The Gastroc and Plantar Flexor complexes
  • And your Heart!

And this is just the motion of squatting without using your arms! Done slowly, deep, and deliberately will build core strength as well as muscle mass.

Quads and hamstrings definitely work with squats. One of my favorite exercises!

Squats rank among my top 3 exercises. They also have a lot of variations both with and without weights.

  3. yes, squats are a staple among weight lifting excercises. I highly recommend keeping track of the weight you are currently doing with squats and slowly build these up. Also do deep squat stretches beforehand. As you do these you will be able to go lower and lower as your flexibility increases.

what exercise burns the hips fat??? is it, the lunges, bur pees, squats, or which is it tell me people???
and what foods should i consume, for a diet to lose fat???

    • staff says:

Exercise in general will burn fat. Unfortunately there are no exercises that will burn fat in specific body parts. Squats are a good choice because they work the entire lower body. But, for the most part, they’re a pretty simple movement to master. As far as foods to burn calories, check out this diet to lose fat and burn fat calories specifically.

Squats are one of my favorite exercises! I do them a lot in karate. I agree that they help the quads and hamstrings and tibialis anterior. Anyone know what mountain climbers help though? Those are my second favs! Peace out!!!
